Will The Pre-Accused Please Rise

warning
Welcome to the park. The City of Winnipeg knows what kind of low life you are. The City knows that your dog is mean and shits everywhere and that you would never think of cleaning up after it.

Thought you might head to the park for some good times? Think again! There will be no fun allowed at the City parks. Leave your sound producing equipment at home scumbag! The City parks are for quiet non-dog loving citizens only.

unwelcome

I guess no one at the City has ever heard of Dr. Seuss? As The Cat in The Hat once said, “I know it is wet and the sun is not sunny, but we can have lots of good fun that is funny”.

These un-welcome signs and others like it are a perfect example of the attitude of this whole city. When I see these sorts of things, it makes me feel like I have an enemy somewhere. I’m a grown-up and it bugs me like crazy that some City official thinks that my dog is as unruly as my kids. They even changed our slogan from “Friendly Manitoba”. That makes me sad too. I want to live in a friendly place, what’s wrong with that? “Spirited Energy”. Manitobans can’t figure out what that means , so we just ignore it altogether.

Ironically, on my way back from buying cigs just now, Charles Adler was on CJOB going off about animal rights. The question was something about what right of choice a dog might have and what sort of representation a dog would be entitled to in a negotiation. Shut The Front Door! I thought we were anti-dog in this town! Or are we more anti-kid? I’m so confused.

A few years ago, there was a proposal to improve one of the parks in my neighborhood. The idea was to put in some better playground equipment and put an addition on one of the buildings to house an arts and crafts program for the kids. I was so excited, because my kids were little at the time. The cranky citizens of the neighborhood got so up in arms about it, that they got a petition together and put an instant stop to it. Their thought was that a fun arts and crafts program would probably attract kids. Kids, as everyone knows cause all sorts of loudness and damage. Area residents would not stand for it.

Folks knew that the kids in this city weren’t worth the effort. Turns out they were right. Check the news. Some teenager is breaking the law right now, guaranteed. Good thing we didn’t waste our time and money on fun things for them while they were little. We need that money for more cops and kid jails because they all hate us. Stealing cars, assaulting citizens and roaming the streets in their gangs. Hooligans.

As for me & my kids, we pretty much stayed in the yard for about 5 years. Thanks Winnipeg.

  1. I miss the Friendly Manitoba also… Spirited Energy to me means…..”Intoxicated Exertion” And there’s lot of that around!

  2. The complainers would be the same people who buy a house near the airport.

My Darling Bride is a Police dispatcher in Ontario that deals with this all the time.

  5. Hey, I found your blog while searching on Google. I have a blog on online stock trading, I’ll bookmark your site.

  6. On the one hand I understand the unfriendly tone of these signs is very negative. However, you’d be surprised how many people let their dog poop all over parks, even where children play. There are also those who let their dogs run wild. The same is true of some party types who stack up garbage cans, burn picnic tables, children’s structures, etc. It is the low life types who are causing this approach by the city.

But what you say is true. Children, even dog owners need places where they can enjoy themselves and have fun. I’d rather see kids making some noise in a park, than joining a gang. I don’t see very many kids out at playgrounds anymore. I also don’t see many playing ball hockey…riding bikes… The streets are strangely empty of children.

I’m not sure what the answer is. I believe the city wants people to enjoy the parks and to have reasonable fun.

What ever happened to ordinary people being able to regulate themselves?

I remember once camping with my parents when a group of bikers were making noise. At 11PM one of them told the others to “SHUT the $^%& UP!, people are trying to sleep”. The entire group turned off loud music, and toned down the chatter out of respect for families sleeping nearby. These days I hear all sorts of people who shout at night with complete disregard for those who might be sleeping.

Too bad we need a bunch of angry signs to remind people how to behave responsibly.
